Increased Fluoride Exposure Can Give You Stronger, Healthier Teeth

Posted .

While it might not be obvious, your tooth enamel is actually riddled with microscopic pores and textures. Poor oral hygiene and a propensity for enjoying acidic foods and beverages can gradually create a mildly acidic environment in your mouth. This can cause these pores to grow as your tooth enamel slowly erodes.

In many cases of enamel erosion, it often takes added daily measures to mitigate and reverse long-term symptoms like tooth sensitivity. Cutting back on acidic foods and beverages, including soft drinks, will go a long way toward preventing additional enamel erosion. You should also brush your teeth with a brand of toothpaste that includes added fluoride and one that has earned the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance.

If your regular dental checkup at Irvine Dental Group reveals further signs of enamel erosion or tooth decay, our dentists might recommend a fluoride treatment or fluoride supplements.

The fluoride treatment can be administered at the end of your checkup. It only takes a few minutes to boost the mineral strength of your tooth enamel. If Drs. Niu, Yuen, Wong, and Dang prescribe a concentrated fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash, you will need to use them as directed. Ideally, it’s best to apply them to your teeth right before going to bed or at another time where you won’t need to eat or drink for at least a half an hour. This will help the fluoride fully saturate the microscopic pores on the surface of your teeth.
